Modesty and Purity Culture

Don’t cause a brother to stumble.

We’ve heard this phrase applied to modesty, but do we really know the context of Romans 14? Who is the weaker brother—the man or the woman? The answer varies based on who we’re talking about, but that’s not something you learned if you grew up in purity culture. In purity culture, the weaker brother is always described as the man.

But is this what Scripture teaches? In this book, we’ll delve into the topic of modesty. We’ll look at the passages often cited to support purity culture’s modesty narratives, as well as how the Spirit of God frees us to a much better way.

I Kissed Dating Hello: Why Christian Girls Are Done With Courtship Culture

I Kissed Dating Hello: Why Christian Girls Are Done With Courtship Culture

Christians possess all the power of God to pursue His holiness in their lives. On our own, we could never achieve virtue and honor. But by walking according to the Spirit of God in us, His character is manifested in ours. Courtship culture has ignored the role the Holy Spirit plays in relationships, and has taken up the mantle of the Spirit for itself. And like most pseudo-Holy Spirits, it doesn’t do a very good job.

We can set up physical standards, have chaperones, and be as “intentional” as we like, but if the Spirit of God is not alive and active in our hearts, we can find sin. Purity is not a list of outward actions. It is an inner change of desire and priority.

Does God Forgive Sexual Sin?

Does God Forgive Sexual Sin?

Sexual addiction is more common than many of us realize. And in the wake of purity culture, many Christians don’t know how to think well about sex and sexual sin. In this episode, Phy breaks down why sexuality deserves honor and the hope we have when we’ve fallen short.

Freedom from Legalism Ebook

How do I break free from the endless cycle of rules and judgment?

Born out of my own journey as a recovering legalist, this book illuminates the often overlooked pitfalls of legalism and the stunted spiritual growth it fosters. Legalism, while appearing to be a shortcut to holiness, only distances us from God, undermining our understanding of His Spirit and His will. I seek to help you break these chains and to lead you into a confident faith that aligns with the Spirit’s guidance and the beauty of Scripture.

I too lived in the shadows of purity culture, adhering to rules and judging deviations. But when doubt cast its shadows, I left legalism behind. I know the pain it inflicts, the false sense of security it offers, and the tantalizing temptation of its shortcuts. But in Christ, there is a path to purity and holiness that nurtures relationship over rules. Together, we will explore this journey, leaning into the Spirit of God, dedicating our hearts to the Most High, and seeking the quiet approval of Jesus Christ over the applause of men.

Honest Marriage Episode Three // On Sexual Sin

Honest Marriage Episode Three // On Sexual Sin

Years ago I (Phylicia) was a sexuality blogger. I wrote extensively about purity culture, boundaries, dating, and my own history of sexual sin and addiction. Though I’ve seen stopped writing about it (the blog posts are still there!) it’s still a part of my story and by association, part of my marriage. Josh also brings experiences from his past to our relationship. In this week’s episode of the marriage series, we discuss how those testimonies impact our relationship and what to do when your spouse struggles with sexual sin.

Is Dating Just Practice for Divorce?

Is Dating Just Practice for Divorce?

A few weeks ago I received an interesting question on my weekly Q&A show on Instagram. The reader asked: “Do you think dating is just practice for divorce, like many conservative groups say?” I was a little surprised I’d never heard this before, given my own acquaintance with purity culture. It’s the perfect lay-up to the courtship conversation. And it’s a question we really need to answer in an age of temporary love.
