While recording this week, Lisa and I got a chance to practice what we preach. We discuss in this podcast episode on productivity that we actually recorded during naptime, which is no easy task! We typically record at night when our children are sleeping, but because we have a “plan B” for finishing our work, we could be flexible. In other words, you’ll hear a few child noises in the background.
They tell you ‘the days are long, but the years are short’. We young moms roll our eyes and glance at the spit up and crumbs but – we all know it’s true. As I reflected on this last year of pulling up roots, big transitions, and seasons of waiting, I asked myself: “What about motherhood has taught me the most?” Unequivocally, the answer was Adeline’s birth.
For the last five years my life has been ruled by an inconsistent schedule. Four of those years my own schedule rotated between first, second, and third shifts, with weekends added on occasion. When I married Josh, the schedule became even worse. We never knew when he’d get off work each day.
Waiting strengthens character. It sanctifies the soul. Simply put, you will not be ready to do great things for God if you refuse to embrace your current season. He already has a “great thing” for you to do: To learn to wait well.

We want to accomplish our best in work, love, and play. But when we pursue productivity simply to be productive, we’ve missed the purpose of it! That’s why productivity should be coupled with grace in order to be effective for Christ.
We’ve made purity all about sex instead of embracing it holistically. And because many Christians see purity as a means to an end – not as a lifestyle God expects from His children – they’re quick to compromise when the going gets tough.
